4.0 is quite different from the 3.8, though both had some common roots in development history. 3.3 and 3.8 are OHV designs. These are more low RPM torque motors. They will run out of breath as the RPMs rise. 3.5 and 4.0 are SOHC designs. These are strong motors that love to rev compared to 3.3/3.8.

It's not an emissions related component though. In the small NA (2.0l and 2.4l) engines there is an oiling tube that goes to the camshafts that is just a little too small. So any synthetic oil crystalizing will clog it up - and that's easy to do when the engines don't get to full operating temperatures often.
