Yeah I technically haven't beaten half life 2 according to steam achievements despite playing that game religiously. Episode 1 released in 2006. Steam achievements were rolled out with the orange box in 2007, so theres over a year of people finishing episode 1 without achievements. I technically never finished.
Basically, the original gives more story (through gameplay) while Black Mesa gives story clues by dialogue. I think by these facts, that Half Life 1 is good for a first time because of more story being told.
