Better to SMELT some tier 2-3 weapons u loot. Then u get a bit more skill.. bit more smelting. Make BETTER swing swords (2 handed to more dps.. and thus more denar value).. smelt. etc. Eventually u get high skill. and a fair bit of unlocks. I started levelling smithing skill and testing experience gain from forging and refining. Before the questions here are some results: Only the number of resulting materials matters in refining. So if you have the perk and refine 3 wood into 2 charcoal you get the same amont of exp as refining 2 wood into 1 charcoal twice. Refining charcoal is more efficient for exp gain and economy than forging.

If you're looking for profit, the most profitable is not 2h sword, but 2h polearm swordstaves. Require neither fine steel nor thamaskene, only mid-tier metals and wood, and sells for around 12~16k. The most 'expensive' weapon straight up, is a highest tier two handed sword which will sell for around 20k, and has a listed price of over 200k.
Grizzly Sep 7, 2022 @ 8:57pm. might be that you "unlocked" starting parts (yes that happens) but thats a one time thing per playthrough, just move on and smith/melt more stuff. you will only learn what kind of weapon you are smithing/smelting if i remember right (random parts of that weapon kind) and first all parts of tier 1, then 2, then 3
