As for just latching onto the wall like skyscale, I fail to see how it is supposed to provide much of a positive change to the gameplay. The Skyscale was designed to ensure players could chip away at their leisure, have a small story to go with it and be able to get it fully solo. They even provided the ability to skip over jumping puzzles. When ArenaNet decides to dedicate thier best team to create exclusive content in order to please a certain type of players, they also need to remember: to these players, Guild Wars 2 is and will always be a casual game. A lot of these players are probably even too hardcore to admit they are playing Guild Wars 2.
If you are new player skyscale price gets way higher than people claim. There is your problem. As a new player, the skyscale should not be on the list of things to get soon. As a new player, you are by definition, new. You probably want to level up first (to survive), plus level crafting (as this is required).
Griffon is heavily reliant on a high ground to be useful for their superspeed. Whereas a Skyscale is useful on demand even on the ground or on a high tower. If you want superspeed on demand, you use a rollerbeetle instead. You and your party don't even need a griffon at all.
